Established in 1980s, Auckland University Photographic Society is one of the longest-running clubs at university. Its aims include encouraging everyone with an interest in photography to get out there and try their own, and to be aware of what else is on the scene. PhotoSoc welcomes all students with an interest in photography, whether they are absolute beginners or advance ametuer.

What activities do we do?

Members meet up regularly to discuss anything photography, visit galleries, go on field trips and more. Free workshops on camera basics, black & white processing, printing and studio lighting are provided there for you to step deeper into photography. Furthermore, members have the opportunity to present their work to the public in exhibitions that are organised by PhotoSoc.

What equipment/resources do we have?

We have our very own darkroom with chemicals, paper for printing photos, enlargers. We also have the computer with photoshop and a scanner, internet connection and printer coming soon. If you need any help on the computer in the darkroom, please contact James. We also have a digital SLR camera which is available for hire to members.

Why should I join?

To meet new people, discover new things about photography, do something outside of your comfort zone, learn how to print your own black and white photos, learn how to use that digital camera that’s been lying around, learn about composition, colour, styles, and artists. There is no pressure to learn all these things or even to know anything about photography, this is a club where you can relax and learn at your own pace.

How do I join?

Come to the Photosoc stall (Opposite to Pod Cafe) during Orientation week 1st-5th March or email our Membership Manager Purvi purvip123@gmail.com about joining.

Where is the darkroom?

The darkroom is located above the Maidment Theatre. Across the road from General Library, there is stairs that leads up to the Quad level. Turn right and go all the way up the stairs opposite the ATMs, you will see the only door that is the Darkroom.

What does the darkroom look like?

It consists of two printing rooms, one developing room and an open area for hanging out, displaying photos, hiding, studying etc.

How do I get the key to the darkroom?

Go to the old AUSA building opposite the general library and show them your PhotoSoc membership card. Now we have a policy of $20 deposit, but don't worry your deposit will be given back as you return the key.

Who do I borrow the club camera from?

Contact our Darkroom Technician Rouan a.tkanek@gmail.com

Tutorials and Workshop?

Will be announced throughout the year. If there is a workshop that you would like to request do not hesitate to request it. But otherwise we will have film processing, film printing, print toning and new workshops this year like a Photoshop workshop. Please find upcoming workshops here at the Calendar.

Where can I buy film, paper etc?

Film and paper is available to buy from the club (this can be done by contacting our Darkroom Technician Rouan a.tkanek@gmail.com). Alternatively you can buy it from any photographic supplies retailer like Apix(with discount as Apix is the club's sponsor), PhotoWarehouse etc.

Where can I print photos?

For black and white you can use the darkroom, for colour/digital photos you can go to ColourCity – located on Lorne St next to Esquires, or a professional lab such as PCL in Newton. An even better option now is to print at our darkroom where we have got a professional quality inkjet printer. We could print up to A3+ with very reasonable price. See here. Find our Darkroom Technician Rouan at office hour, see below.

Opening hours?

We will have the darkroom open regularly for you to visit without the key. Come in to have a chat with us and other members. Ask any questions that you are too shy to ask on the forum or request a mini workshop about how to do printing...

Purvi - every Tuesday 11:30 - 12:30pm

Rouan - every Friday 11.30 - 12.30pm

What if I still don't have access to the forum?

The username and password should be emailed to you automatically soon after you signed up. If not, please contact Angus angusyeh@gmail.com.
